The Brainerd Lakes Area Women’s Fund (BLAWF) has selected Ruthie Gmeinder as this year’s recipient of the Women Making Waves award. Established in 2009, the BLAWF enhances the lives of women and girls in the Brainerd Lakes Area and besides offering educational opportunities and fundraising events, the BLAWF has provided $80,000 in grants to organizations supporting similar missions.
Raised in Brainerd most of her life, Ruthie attended Brainerd High School and graduated from the University of MN as a Dietitian. She has owned and operated Gull Lake Resort for 32 years, with her husband Mike. She is married with two sons and three grandchildren. Her passions are travel, gardening, art, nature, and music. Ruth has served numerous boards and committees including: Brainerd Rotary Club, ISD181 Board, Community Education, Family Services Collaborative, Early Childhood Family Education, Joint Powers, Brainerd Lakes Community Foundation, the Women’s Fund, and Essentia Home Care and Ethics committee. She has donated costumes to Lakes Area Music Festival, GLAPA, The Northland Arboretum’s Haunted Trail, and other organizations. Ruth started the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program for Crow Wing in 1979, and was part of the Child Protection Team.
Ruth’s personality is as colorful as her outfits, and she is definitely a Woman Making Waves in the area and has touched the lives of many people. Her joy in helping out is contagious and she is never afraid to get others involved alongside her. Congratulations Ruthie!
